Pa-Kua Poster Now Available

Pa-Kua Sign Delivers Us from Evil.
This sign encapsulates the healing, balancing, harmonizing, righteous and loving powers in the universe. It radiates and shields people with these powers.
One Yin and one Yang form what is called Tao (Yi-Ching). According to archeological evidence, around twelve thousand years ago prehistoric ancients already knew how to utilize the positive and negative concepts of Yin and Yang. About eight thousand years ago during the Emperor Fu-Shi Dynasty, the ancients began to use the male symbol —- to represent Yang and the female symbol — — to represent Yin. Yin-Yang and their interactions and interrelations were represented by the Tai Chi symbol (intertwined black and white “fishes” shown above). During that time Yin and Yang were used in an algebraic formula (—- + – – )³, which produced the following results —-³ + —-² – – + —- – –² + – –³ [exactly as in (a+b)³ = a³ + a²b + ab² + b³].
All eight three-trigrams lined diagrams (called trigrams) are called Pa-Kua. At the most elemental level, each came to symbolize a natural phenomenon, which respectively are: Heaven, Wind, Fire, Lake, Thunder, Water, Mountain and Earth. Five thousand years ago during the Yellow Emperor Dynasty, people imparted upon the Pa-Kua the principles of the Five-Element Theory, presented in the Yellow Emperor classes called Nei-Ching Su-Wen or “Internal Medicine”. Consequently the Pa-Kua was aligned with the eight major points on the compass and assigned its intrinsic color. Heaven is located northwest and is colored gold; wind, southeast and light blue; fire, south and red; lake, west and silver; thunder, east and blue; water, north and black; mountain, northeast and yellow; earth, southwest and brown/orange.
Beyond the level of physical laws, the eight trigrams represent all the remaining phenomenon in the universe, such as laws of spirituality, healing, economics, reproduction, success, etc… For complete details, please consult The Great Tao and/or an Ordained Taoist Minister with TheQiInstitute and the Foundation of Tao.
Thousands of years of research and arranging with greatest efficiency all the universal concepts—multiple meanings on multiple levels— into a compact symbol of perfect balance finally resulted in what is called the Later Heaven Chart, pictured above. Although many earlier, incomplete arrangements exist, the unique Later Heaven Chart has been proven in beneficial effectiveness throughout its five thousand year history. No one should alter it for any reason; otherwise the energy of its perfect balance would be broken. Where there is imbalance, people will know and suffer its devastating consequences: psychological and physical torment such as depression, distress, illness etc… The emanation from all the laws and perfect balance of the universe encapsulated in the chart is the only power to counteract imbalance. When balance is restored, happiness, health, healing, wisdom, success, etc. is restored.
Due to its environment-altering power, the Pa-Kua is the fundamental Fengshui chart. Since every dwelling is constructed under limited circumstances or conditions, every dwelling possesses more or less some kind of defect. In some cases the defects will never be remedied. The easiest way to correct the problem is to simply hang one or more Pa-Kua posters (framed or unframed) wherever needed in the house. The vibration of balanced energy will permeate instantaneously, promoting spiritual harmony leading to palpably happy atmospheres.
If meditation is done in front of this poster, the spiritual, mental and physical folds of the body will reach a high level of inner peace instantaneously. Used this way it is a powerful tool for overall healing.
To enable more people to easily use the chart, a Pa-Kua poster is available for a limited time. 25″x 32″. Quality printed exactly as it should appear, in brilliant colors with gold and silver foil embossing. Framable (can be hung as a work of art in the office, living room, bedroom etc…). A portion of the proceeds of each poster is a donation to Dr. Chang’s Foundation of Tao via TheQiInstitute.
Authorized by The Foundation of Tao.
2020 Year of the Yang Metal Rat
We began the transition from the year of the Yin Earth Pig/Boar , with the year of the Yang Metal Rat celebration beginning January 25th, 2020. GengZi 庚子, the Year of the Golden (Yang Metal) Rat begins February 4, 2020. This is also the “real” first day of spring, the commonly accepted Western first day of spring March 20th is actually the peak of spring, each day after we transition towards Summer. The last day of the year of the Rat is February 11, 2021. The Lunar New Year (Chinese New Year) occurs on the second new moon after the winter solstice. The festival lasts approximately two weeks and ends with the Full Moon Festival of Heaven or Festival of Lanterns on February 8th.
The Rat begins a new twelve year cycle and the next Metal Rat year will not occur again until 2080. As the story is told, when the Jade Emperor gathered the animals together to create the calendar the Rat was riding on the back of the Ox and when they were approaching the Emperor the Rat jumped off the Ox’s back and ran to the Emperor, thus arriving first. The Ox second, followed by the other animals with the Pig/Boar last. Hence the order of the 12 Animal system.
Each Rat year is a sign of a new beginning a type of renewal with a new energy cycle. “The Rat symbol is symbolic of adaptability, kindness, creativity, foresight, and intelligence. It is also known for success, expanse, stealth, strength, and the ability to solve problems that other people cannot. (Master Tang)”
Ken Cohen states the “Positive Side: The fact that this year is the beginning of the 12-year cycle and the elements are in harmony means that it should be a relatively good year for creativity, prosperity, education, romance, and to re-dedicate yourself to health and balance.
Negative Side: However, because earth element is lacking and metal could be interpreted as sinking into the water, it is important to be extra careful that you build a stable foundation under whatever you do—whether building a house, studying a subject, or starting a new job or relationship. Also, metal and water are cold and relate to autumn and winter. The cold attitude of people in a position of power or authority and the cold nature of large institutions, such as government and corporations, will be even more apparent, which means continuing worldwide protests against injustice, especially in the autumn and winter seasons. It is interesting to note that the Boxer Rebellion, one of the most famous Chinese revolts against colonialism, peaked in 1900, a Metal Rat Year. (Ken Cohen)”
“As I mentioned in my Winter Greetings in early November 2019, the cosmological energy this winter season has weakened the lung function and/or immune system of many… The off-season warmth many of us experienced this winter is turning towards a cold spring and this pattern of cosmological Qi I am afraid will not be much better for many people. The new cold spring Qi has already begun to influence those people who suffer from joint pain and/or lower back pain. It is possible that this pattern is also weakening the function of some people’s liver, heart, and/or lung. Even now near the close of the winter season, the world is watching the Wuhan coronavirus as it spreads in China and beyond. In Chinese tradition, Rat is a symbol for brilliance, deep wisdom and strong new life energy. It has the most honored position of being the very first animal symbol in the Chinese zodiac. Rat brings the power to shake off any old patterns of stagnation to create power and usher in new energy into your life. The Rat is inherently noble and prosperous. Perhaps under the influence of Yang Metal energy, this year brings the potential for double prosperity into our lives? The word for “metal” in Chinese in Jin 金, which we also use to mean gold. (Master Wu)”
In our article 2019 Year of the Yin Earth Pig, we predicted based on prior Earth Pig years “we see the tendency for: severe weather, erratic weather patterns (as in the USA deep freeze of 1899), buildup of tensions with communist/socialist groups and countries, promotion of/use of electric cars, expansion of trade, revolutionary inventions (vulcanized rubber production), etc… JiHai己亥 (Yin Earth Pig) energy suggests that we will have even more dramatic, changing weather patterns in coming year. The extremely dangerous cold that has descended upon the US, from the Midwest to the East Coast, these last several days, is a signal of the upcoming weather craziness this year.

2019 Year of the Yin Earth Pig
We began the transition from the year of the Yang Earth Dog in January 2019, with the year of the Yin Earth Pig/Boar beginning February 4th 2019. This is also the “real” first day of spring, the commonly accepted Western first day of spring March 20th is actually the peak of spring, each day after we transition towards Summer.
Pigs are diligent, compassionate, and generous. They have great concentration, once they set a goal, they will devote all their energy to achieving it. Pigs never suspect trickery, and are susceptible to being fooled.
Pigs are fairly calm when faced with trouble. No matter how difficult the problems are, they can handle things properly and carefully.
Master Zhongxian Wu states, “in China, the pig is a symbol of relaxation, caution, bravery, knowledge and faith. Chinese parents are happy to have babies born during the year of the Pig, as they believe the children will be blessed with an easy going personality, great intelligence and will grow to have a rich, noble life. (https://bluewillow88.wordpress.com/2019/02/08/xinniankuaile/)”
2019 being a Yin Earth Pig year is very interesting, given that Earth and Pigs are also Yin. This will magnify the traits of being: reflective, gathering, patience, waiting, being resourceful, etc… Earth also represents hidden potential, silence, retreat, passiveness. “Even though the earth is a great supplier, it does so silently. Human life does not go on forever (nothing does); sooner or later it will reach an end. This is a fact. Nobody should feel sad or regretful, because it cannot be prevented. Instead people should develop an attitude of confronting and dealing with an ending or stopping. But human nature favors startings and rejects endings, celebrates developings and regrets sustainings. Why must this be so, when much goodness can be derived from a stop?… The principle of withdrawal and how one utilizes it can work in favor of one’s objectives and constitute a great wisdom. Therefore, cultivating an attitude of withdrawal is beneficial… (Dr. Chang,Integral Management of Tao )”
The pig represents the end of the Chinese animal zodiac cycle, and earth, as stated above also represents and ending. Pig years are a great time to reflect on the lessons of the prior years, and making preparations for the new cycle which will occur in 2020.
Earth pig years are a great time for prosperity, being fortunate and lucky, however, it is important to balance this out with proper mindfulness as to not become greedy—fat, lazy etc…
This is a great year to get your personal and business finances in order and to come up with plans to reduce debt and increase savings/investments.
In our article 2018 Year of the Yang Earth Dog, we predicted based on prior Earth Dog years that “Nationally and globally, there is the potential for things to be “all over the place”, however, usually the nature of the Earth will calm down the tendency for the dog to fight for control, dominance or power. Prior Dog years saw expansion and innovation of space exploration, and also saw buildups to military conflict in the Middle East and Cuba, Spain, South Africa etc… Nuclear issues became a major concern in 1958 with the buildup of arsenals and several accidents involving nuclear weapons.”
When we examine prior Earth Pig years we see the tendency for: severe weather, erratic weather patterns (as in the USA deep freeze of 1899), buildup of tensions with communist/socialist groups and countries, promotion of/use of electric cars, expansion of trade, revolutionary inventions (vulcanized rubber production), etc… “JiHai 己亥 (Yin Earth Pig) energy suggests that we will have even more dramatic, changing weather patterns in coming year. The extremely dangerous cold that has descended upon the US, from the Midwest to the East Coast, these last several days, is a signal of the upcoming weather craziness this year. (Master Wu)”

2018 Year of the Yang Earth Dog
The transition from the year of the Yin Fire Rooster began January 2018, with the year of the Yang Earth Dog beginning February 4th 2018. This is also the “real” first day of spring, the commonly accepted Western first day of spring March 20th this year is actually the peak of spring, each day after we transition towards Summer.
What traits come to mind when you think of a dog: loyalty, courage, playfulness, protector, hunter, intelligence, empathy, leadership (alpha), stubborn, etc… In Taoism the Earth element represents: retreat, passiveness, silence. Even though the earth is a great supplier it does so silently. This being a Yang year will amplify the nature of the Dog, however, the Earth will help temper the potential to exaggerate these traits.
Master Wu stated: “According to Chinese cosmology, the Earth Dog Year of 2018 will start on LiChun立春, February 4 at 05:28 (Beijing time), while Chinese New Year’s day this year will be February 16… For this coming energetic year, the Dog animal sign (Earthly Branch) indicates that the specific energetic qualities of nature associated with the Dog (such as intuitive, smart, artistic, cautious, social, honest, loyal, uneasy, evasive, or stubborn energy) will exert their influences on us human beings.
When properly harnessed, Dog energy will help you channel your truthful and creative nature towards completing tasks and striving to achieve your life’s greatest goals.
Left unchecked, Dog energy can easily trap you in some physical or emotional obstacle(s) that will make it virtually impossible to get anything done. (Master Zhongxian Wu)”
Earth Dog years are usually a good time to make progress on your goals, setup security etc… Be wary of the tendency to lash out quickly, temper your bark and bite or things could escalate quickly. Nurture the good attributes of the dog; this is not the time to be a rogue wolf, team building with the pack will ensure success.
Nationally and globally, there is the potential for things to be “all over the place”, however, usually the nature of the Earth will calm down the tendency for the dog to fight for control, dominance or power.
Prior Dog years saw expansion and innovation of space exploration, and also saw buildups to military conflict in the Middle East and Cuba, Spain, South Africa etc… Nuclear issues became a major concern in 1958 with the buildup of arsenals and several accidents involving nuclear weapons.
Let’s look at three prior Earth Dog years 1958, 1898 and 1838:

2016 Year of the Yang Fire Monkey
As we transition from the year of the Wood Goat to the year of the Yang Fire Monkey, it is time for us to reflect on what changes may occur so that we can be prepared no matter what situations may arise.
When we examine the last two Fire Monkey years (1896 and 1956) we will get a better understanding of what could occur/repeat this year. A cursory glance of the last two years of the Wood Goat will show the similarities we experienced in 2015.
Monkey years tend to reflect the nature of the animal being: unpredictable, quick to change, seeking new adventures, and also in Yang years the negative aspect can be enhanced; short tempered, quick to fight and prone to aggression etc…
Major events of 1956
- 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union
- Morocco declares its independence from France.

- The Philippine Revolution erupts.
- An extraordinary heat wave affects the northeastern United States.
- Skookum Jim Mason, George Carmack and Dawson Charlie discover gold in the Klondike, Yukon.
We can see from these past two Fire Monkey years that the world experienced Socialist Revolutions, racial strife, major weather events, war in the Middle East as well as economic advances that later turned into bubbles. Will any of these repeat in 2016, only time will tell.
Master Zhongxian Wu mentions that:
“According to Daoist Five Element cosmology and alchemy principles, these energies will manifest as Cold Water, Heat Fire, and Wind Wood.
In other words, we will experience dramatic weather patterns this year, with weather patterns shifting very quickly. This pattern will prove difficult for those of you who have weak gastrointestinal function, kidney function, or heart function.”
Regardless of what happens in the world this year, make sure you focus on your internal cultivation, remaining calm and balanced, as well as, strengthening your body, mind and spirit.

5 tips to have this year be your best year ever
Every year, many people, before or after the ball drops and the fireworks end, make several “New Year’s resolutions”. Usually, people carry over unresolved items from the prior year. Others come up with a list that is so unattainable that it practically guarantees they will not be achieved. If you are not involved in Cancer research or the health-care field what are the odds that you will cure Cancer? If you are not an astronaut, forget about walking on the moon as well.
Another mistake people make is having plans that do not personally affect them or others. It’s more like a “wish list”, and for others it’s a “look good” list.
- Goals: As mentioned above, create goals that are realistic and attainable, however, do not pick goals that you are guaranteed of attaining either. If you know you are getting a promotion this month, then do not have that as a goal. Make sure you write your goals down and tell someone what they are. We all need someone to help hold us accountable. This is important: write down 6 month, 2 year and 5 year goals, as explained in the article, Attitude of Heaven: Taoist method of planning & attaining goals, then review those goals monthly and make any revisions that are necessary.
- Community: Make friends with or join groups of like minded people. Let’s say you want to lose weight, it is going to be much easier to do so with a group of people who also want to lose weight. Even better, make sure you know people who are already their “ideal” weight. Want to quit smoking, have friends that already quit and those that never smoked. The flip side of this coin is that you also need to distance yourself from those people that do not reflect your goals, or the new you that you are creating/enhancing.
- Activities: Actively participate in things that are going to help your goals/mission. Avoid things that are just going to take up your time, waste your energy and distract you from your mission and goals.
- Discipline/Honesty: Benjamin Franklin is credited with saying that “the early bird gets the worm”. Sometimes the difference between success and failure is not being willing to change. Often times people complain that they just do not have enough time to exercise, how do I find time to cook, meditate, go for walks etc…. After hearing this, ask them (or yourself), did you watch TV today, what time did you wake up etc…? Consider that the average American under 65 watches an average of 5 hours of TV every day, if your over 65 its closer to 7 hours per day (Cross-Platform Report). Imagine how much extra time you would have if you cut back to 4 hours per day. How about waking up 30 minutes earlier? Now you have an extra 1.5 hours in your day, and that is after only adjusting TV viewing and the time you wake up.
- Be honest with yourself. We all know if we need to lose weight, drink too much, are eating too much, not as healthy as we could be etc… Perhaps, resolve to not buy larger sizes, if those clothes are getting tight, time to put down the remote and do some internal exercise. Stop going to those fast food and chain restaurants, not only will your health improve, you will also save money.
- Invest in loss: Lao Tzu stated that in order to gain we must first be willing to lose. You will make mistakes, you will forget, the important thing is that you keep going. We have all heard that the best thing to do after falling off the horse….is to get back on it. So what if you have been trying to do something for the last few years and have not done it yet. Thomas Edison failed between 700-10,000 times (depending on who you ask) before finding the correct method for the light bulb. When asked he said, I did not fail, I simply found “X” number of ways it will not work.

The 24 hour news cycle or 24 hour stress industry?
Do you remember what life was like before the 24 hour news industry? What was television, radio, newspaper and radio like before CNN, BBC, FoxNews, MSNBC and the countless other stations, channels and corporations whose purpose it is to report something 24 hours a day? Let us not forget the endless apps for smartphones and tablets that also offer news and notifications “pushed” to your device, morning, noon, night and even overnight.
Have you ever observed someone “glued” to the TV watching the latest “Breaking News”, or one of the endless updates on news reported earlier in the day?
Recently, this National Taoism Examiner had such an experience. Early in the morning, there were several people watching one of the 24 hour news networks, with such intensity that they could not look away from the TV while speaking to someone in the same room. When the phone rang they answered the phone with their eyes still fixated on the TV. After more than an hour of watching “repeating” news stories, they decided to go out for breakfast and do a little sight seeing and shopping. Upon returning, immediately the TV went back on and the news network (approx. 6 or 7 hours later) was still reporting the same exact news from earlier in the morning. More apparent updates, of the same news.
Terror attacks around the world, bombings in the Middle East, burglaries in your neighborhood, shootings outside a nightclub, a woman raped while walking home from the bus, daily car accidents on local roads, house fires reported that occur in cities several states (or countries) away, entertainers/celebrities being arrested, Federal Reserve raising interest rates, stock market going up, stock market crashing, global warming, global climate change, Ad nauseum…
It would be interesting to see a study comparing the levels of stress observed and reported pre-1980’s compared to today, and see if there is a correlation with the rise of the 24 hour news cycle.
How many people watch the morning news while having breakfast, what do you think the effect this has on ones digestion? Is it really suitable to start ones day with a barage of bad news? Imagine the effect on sleep patterns when people watch the news right before going to sleep.
In his book “8 Weeks to Optimum Health” Dr. Andrew Weil advises people to slowly wean oneself off the news addiction that many have become accustomed to. He relays a story of a person who looked at the front page from a major newspaper, from decades prior (approx. 100 years prior), only to discover that the headlines were almost identical to the ones being reported as “Breaking News” today.
Henry David Thoreau wrote in Walden:
“I am sure that I never read any memorable news in a newspaper. If we read of one man robbed, or murdered, or killed by accident, or one house burned, or one vessel wrecked, or one steamboat blown up, or one cow run over on the Western Railroad, or one mad dog killed, or one lot of grasshoppers in the winter—we never need read of another. One is enough.”
In Taoist cultivation one is encouraged to move in a completely different direction than 24 hour news; Lao tzu stated in the Tao Te Ching:
“Without going outside his door, one understands all that takes place under the sky; without looking out from his window, one sees the Tao of Heaven. The farther that one goes out from himself, the less he knows. Therefore, the sages got their knowledge without traveling; gave their right names to things without seeing them; and accomplished their ends without any purpose of doing so. (James Legge)”

Get ready this winter has the potential to deliver powerful storms
According to Taoist cosmology winter officially began around November 7th. Some signs of winters arrival are already being felt in Colorado, USA and Northern Europe. Between November 17-19 the greater Boulder Colorado area recorded approx. 18” of snow.
Yet, some parts of the United States have been unusually warm, in particular the southeastern seaboard and especially Florida, which has maintained near summer level heat well into the middle of November.
According to Master Zhongxian Wu:
“this winter season will be extremely cold in most areas of the northern hemisphere, as compared with the last few winters. I expect this to be especially true in those areas that missed cold weather last winter, for instance, in the Stockholm area.… The Cold Water Qi (manifested as heavy mist, rainstorms and snowstorms) will officially kick in about two weeks from now. [two weeks from Nov. 7th]”
The national meteorologists are predicting that this winter will have a similar pattern as the winter of 1998 with a strong “El Nino” effect. If this is true, then we could see a repeat of “The Great North American Ice Storm of 1998, which ’caused massive damage to trees and electrical infrastructure all over the area, leading to widespread long-term power outages. Millions were left in the dark for periods varying from days to weeks, and in some instances, months. It led to 35 fatalities, a shutdown of activities in large cities like Montreal and Ottawa, and an unprecedented effort in reconstruction of the power grid. The ice storm led to the largest deployment of Canadian military personnel since the Korean War, with over 16,000 Canadian Forces personnel deployed, 12,000 in Quebec and 4,000 in Ontario at the height of the crisis.”
This would also be consistent with Master Wu’s prediction of heavy mist, rainstorms and snowstorms as a result of Cold Water Qi.
If we look at the winters from the last two Wood Goat years (1955 and 1895) we see a definite pattern beginning to develop.
- “The Storm of the Century, Great Christmas Flood of 1955”, affected most of the US west coast
- Great Blizzard of 1955 in Wyoming
- March of 1956 most of the North Eastern United States was hit by a major winter storm/blizzard.
- The Great Freeze of 1895 affecting most of Florida, brought temperatures down to 19 degrees in Orlando and 24 degrees in West Palm Beach, decimating the citrus industry.
- Houston, Texas recorded 22” of snow in February 1895. The same system also brought 24” of snow in Rayne Louisiana, 16” in Houma Louisiana (just south of New Orleans), 22” in Lake Charles Louisiana and 6” in Mobile Alabama
It is very important to protect your vital organs, especially your Kidneys, during very cold winters with a lot of snow and/or rain. Internal cultivation (Kidney exercise, Meridian Massage, 8 Directional Exercise, lower back exercises etc…) as well as eating warming foods and drinking warming tea (ginger, cinnamon etc…). Try to conserve your energy as much as possible and avoid drafts and sweating. Also, do not over use the heater in your home as that can cause disruptions of your energy as well.
Regardless of what happens in this winter, make sure you focus on your internal cultivation, remaining calm and balanced, as well as, strengthening your body, mind and spirit.

The Te of Piglet, virtue in action
In 2014 your National Taoism Examiner, reviewed the first part of Benjamin Hoff’s books on Taoist Philosophy; The Tao of Pooh. The first book was recommended for those “looking for a delightful read”, it can serve as a great introduction to Taoist philosophy and as a nice reminder for those who think they know the Tao.
His second book The Te of Piglet, continues where Pooh left off, but shifts the focus onto the smallest animal in the 100 acre forest/woods, and yet despite his size, also the most courageous and virtuous of Poohs friends. If Pooh is the character that embodies the principle of Wu Wei, then Piglet, according to Hoff, embodies another great treasure of Taoism, Te. Te, or Teh, is usually translated as great virtue, or the highest virtue, or Heaven’s Virtue.
Hoff proposes another adaptation of Te: “meaning virtue in action”. This is a thoughtful and worthy addition to the meanings of Te. What value does virtue have, if it is not put to good use? If your virtue has no action, then why have it? What is the point in being a “good person” if you live in a cave alone, cut off from the world? What is the value of not lying or being deceitful, if you are not around people to be honest and truthful with? Would the virtues of the Sun: providing light, warmth etc…matter to us if there was no Earth, would the Suns virtues even still exist?
According to Hoff:
“Te is not, as its English-language equivalent suggests, a one-size fits all sort of goodness or admired behavior that can be recognized as essentially the same no matter who possesses it. It is instead a quality of special character, spiritual strength, or hidden potential unique to the individual—something that comes from the Inner Nature of things. And something, we might add, that the individual who possesses it may be quite unaware of… (p.23)”
The Te of Piglet addresses these questions and more. Where the Tao of Pooh is very philosophical in nature, The Te of Piglet could be called pragmatic. Hoff definitely shares more of his personal observations, some reviewers called them rants, however, he does relate his observations of the modern world to several Taoist Classics.
The book is divided into 11 Chapters and 257 pages:
- What? Another One?
- Interjection
- The—What Was That Again?—of Piglet
- Very Small Animal
- The Eeyore Effect
- The Tigger Tendency
- Things as They Might Be
- Things as They Are
- The Upright Heart
- The Day of Piglet
- Farewell
A very poignent chapter is The Eeyore Effect and is most applicable in our modern society where many are obsessed with 24 hour news, social media, constant information overload and the Critic among others.
He relates the critic to his version of a Chuang tzu story:
“There is a great bird known as the Peng. Its back appears as broad as a mountain range; its wings are like clouds across the sky. It rises up like a whirlwind until it breaks through the high mist and soars into the infinite blue.
As it glides effortlessly along its journey to the sea, a quail in the marsh looks up at it and laughs. ‘What does that bird think it’s doing?’ says the quail. ‘I jump up and fly a few feet; then I come down and flutter from here to there in the bushes. That is what flying is for! Who is that creature trying to fool?’
…So it is that the knowledge of the smallminded cannot reach to that which is great, just as the experience of a few years cannot equal that of many. The mushroom of a morning knows not what takes place at the end of the month; the short-lived cicada has no awareness of what happens in the seasons beyond. (p. 67)”
It is unfortunate that Benjamin Hoff and Penguin Books had a falling out, since he could have created a truly remarkable collection by exploring, in depth, all of the Winnie the Pooh characters.
